Extreme sports photography is beeing on
call 7x 24, while the event lasts. Split
second decisions have to be made on the run. No more photographic technicalities
to fool around... the finger fireing has to be precise, dead on! Know
your equipment, exposure laws and style blind folded. In sports photography
we are talking not an assignment but something natural to your existance...
experiece and moods gained thru time and practice. Sometimes golf country
clubs... others swamps or freezing tundras, snow and sand storms... all
of these shapes up an extreme sports photographer
character.
These expertise comes in handy when the editor has all the material requested, not haveing to go over tons of useless film or archives. Even though "digital" gives us a LIVE proof of our work, there are no second chances to dig either. Sports is a one time shot. While its easier to streach out the EVs on dig, it causes white noise. Dig cameras have problems balanceing out whites and I am still hooked on Velvia (+40 mb). When the conditions permit it and we are not talking a humid, corrosive cave expedition documental... I go dig. Always thinking a Portra profile when shooting "JPEG" and Chrome when shooting "Raw". Edge technology is out there... master analog and THEN swith over! However, I seriously doubt fine photography can ever be replaced by digital. |
